4 Steps to a Chic Modern Bathroom

Admin • July 23, 2019

At one time, luxurious bathrooms carried a more is more aesthetic. You saw lots of high-end materials used in abundance. You might have even seen some glamorous details, such as gilded mirrors. Today's concept of luxury tends to be a little different - more sleek and minimal.

Below are four steps you can take during your bathroom remodel to give your room a chic modern appeal.

1. Open Up the Layout

One of the characteristics of modern design is an uncluttered appearance. You can implement that from the beginning of your remodel project by opening up the layout. You want as few spatial delineations as possible. And the few that you do implement should unobtrusive.

For example, one area that takes a natural delineation of space is the shower. For practical purposes, you need to keep it at least somewhat separate from the rest of the bathroom. Modern bathrooms usually feature glass shower enclosures. The glass doesn't carry any visual weight, so you maintain that sense of openness.

Another area that carries a lot of visual weight is the vanity. Naturally, you don't want to do away with the vanity altogether. However, consider having a floating vanity installed. Such a vanity is attached to the wall and there's space underneath. That space lightens up the visual weight the vanity takes up.

2. Incorporate Lots of Glass

Another characteristic of the modern aesthetic is a preference for manufactured materials. Glass is especially popular in modern design. So, you already know a glass shower enclosure is ideal for that space. The shower isn't the only place that can be augmented by the addition of glass, though.

Some homeowners are incorporating glass into their vanity. You can replace the wooden door panels with glass-paned ones. It's also possible to top the vanity itself with custom-cut glass. Indeed, you can even custom order a glass drop-in sink or top the glass countertop with a glass vessel sink.

Mirrors are also technically glass, just the reflective sort. So, be liberal in your usage of mirrors in your decorating while being careful to maintain privacy.

3. Play with Light

A chic modern bathroom should feel light and airy. The open layout and incorporation of glass are a couple steps in that direction. However, you'll also need to add some artificial illumination. Implementing this illumination in unique ways will help you show some creativity while maintaining the air of sophistication.

For example, recessed lights are a mainstay of modern design. Instead of just placing them discreetly around the bathroom, you could use them to highlight shapes within your décor. Have them installed in a gentle curve to draw attention to a curved portion of your bathroom's design.

Glass and mirrors come into play here, too. Both reflect light, which is useful for illuminating any dim corners. However, you can also use them to reflect your creative lights. For instance, say you decide to add some colorful LED lights. Try to place the lights so they're reflected in the shower enclosure or vanity mirror, which broadens the power of the light.

4. Choose a Simple Palette

Since your goal is a chic modern bathroom - contrasted, say, to a quirky or retro version - your color choice should be simple. Consider a sophisticated black and white palette. Look for ways to add surprise with these colors, say with a glossy black mirror frame, or bright-white vanity topper.

Another chic palette choice is monochromatic. In this case, you'll choose a single color and decorate the entire bathroom in shades of that color. Beige and gray are popular choices, but you could implement a monochromatic palette with any color. If you want some added visual interest, consider a bold pattern in the target color.

Restaurant patrons' opinions continue to be formed even when they're in the bathroom. They base their opinion on more than the cleanliness. The overall design of the bathroom will create an impression that sticks to their opinion of your brand. Glass and mirrors feature heavily in any bathroom design. Use custom glass and mirrors to promote your restaurant's brand even in the bathroom. Imprint Your Logo on Mirrors or Glass Perhaps the most obvious method for promoting your restaurant's brand in the bathroom is with strategic placement of your logo. In this case, you might consider ordering an oversized mirror with your logo imprinted discreetly across the top. You can also have your logo imprinted onto glass and hang it up as an art installation. Protect Decorative Paint With Customized Glass One of the new trends in restaurant design is to create wow factor in the bathroom. Patrons are more likely to remember your restaurant if something like the bathroom caught their attention. One way you can achieve a stunning bathroom is with decorative paint. For example, consider having your logo painted onto the wall. Conversely, you can have a mural painted onto your wall, or you could try something more abstract. The key is to set the artwork apart by protecting the paint with glass. The glass serves as a deconstructed frame for your artwork. Design Vanity Mirrors and Lighting Together While customers aren't going to engage in as much grooming in a restaurant bathroom as they do at home, they still like to check their reflection and perhaps primp. Naturally, they need decent lighting to that end. Design your above-sink mirrors to work with task lighting. Generally, sidelights are more flattering than illumination from above. Choose your lights first and your mirrors second. To create a sense of connection between the lights and the mirror, repeat an element. For instance, you can echo the shape of a wall sconce in the mirror. Choose Mirror Frames Many restaurants feature unframed mirrors, which is fine for a contemporary aesthetic. However, if you want to add old-world glam to your restaurant bathroom, choose framed mirrors. These frames can be ornate and even gilded to promote that sense of glamorous luxury. That said, a modern bathroom would look stunning with minimalist metal frames around the mirrors. Reflect Artwork With a Mirror A classic method for using mirrors to create beauty is to place them so they reflect something specific, in this case artwork. Because the scale of a restaurant bathroom is bigger than in a home, you can get creative with the design. For example, start with an oversized picture. Then place a decorative mirror so that it only reflects part of the picture, thus creating a new way of looking at that artwork. Conversely, use a distorted mirror, such as one customized with curves. The interplay of the mirror's distortion and the artwork will create a memorable display. Add Backlighting to a Glass Installation You can also create your own version of artwork with glass and lighting. In this case, choose one of the semi-opaque glass options, such as frosted or smoked. Have the glass specialists cut it into a geometric shape. Your contractors should install it to a wall with backlighting that shines like a halo around the custom-cut glass. Such an installation is a definite talking point - or selfie point. Create a positive impression in your restaurant patrons' minds by designing a memorable bathroom.
